One long day in Barcelona

I had a total of one day to see as much of Barcelona as possible on foot. That's definitely not easy to do. I missed a lot of things that would have been cool to see, but I got a feel for how strange and energetic this city is.

A big statue of Columbus.  Apparently there was a theory that he was really from Barcelona.  The theory was wrong, but they built a statue anyway.
Also, he's supposed to be pointing to the "New World," but he's actually pointing toward Africa.  Whoops.
You could go up into the Columbus statue to get an aerial view of the city.
Here's a main street along the coast.
Aerial view of Las Ramblas, a crazy touristy street.
A really old church.
A big circular plaza.
I saw a higher concentration of pigeons in that plaza than I've ever seen in my life.
I went to this outdoor market off of Las Ramblas.
Inside the market.  I like this picture.  I couldn't bear to take a picture of the little dead baby pigs they were selling, so I concentrated on the fruit.
A passageway on one side of the market.
Another passageway.
A very strange passenger bridge.
A very strange series of sculptures out in the open.  Barcelona has lots of random artistic things.
This cafe had mirrored sides at an angle so you could see yourself.  That's me.
A big whale (?) statue outside the aquarium.
The Summer Olympics were in Barcelona in 1992.  Here's a statue near the Olympic village.
Series of archways near the Olympic village.
A random street.
Another random street.
A long passageway next to a park.
I went into the park and found a woolly mammoth.
I also found a...umm...set of gears attached to a metal plate.
There was a ridiculously ornate fountain too.
Spain's ripoff of the Arc de Triomphe.
A plaza near my hostel still had plenty of people at like 3 in the morning.
Same plaza, different view.
I went out to the Mediterranean to look at the city lights on the water.
Speaking of which, I saw some pickpockets in action just down the street from that sign.  They were interesting to watch.  They would casually walk down the street until they found a target walking the other way. After passing by the target, they abruptly switched direction and followed the person.   One of the pickpockets would pass ahead of the person to distract him, and the second pickpocket would try to take his wallet.  I was going to yell if they ever succeeded, but I think they noticed me watching because they took off.  I really wanted to get a picture of them but I also really didn't want to get stabbed or something.
Las Ramblas at night.
And probably my favorite picture of the bunch.  This has to be the best warning sign ever.
